KU’s bats stay hot in victory

A 27-degree atmosphere couldn’t cool the Kansas University baseball team’s hot streak.

KU pounded 11 hits, including six doubles, and the Jayhawks upended Eastern Michigan, 6-2, Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark for their sixth consecutive win.

“It was a tough day to play today, obviously,” KU coach Ritch Price said. “At the same time, we’re both from the Midwest, and we both will have to play in these conditions again.”

The methodical Jayhawks scored a run in six of the eight innings, and seven of the starting nine players for No. 21 Kansas (11-3) had at least one hit.

“I told our team in the locker room before we came out here that we needed to show some toughness,” Price said. “I think we were way more aggressive today.”

Senior left fielder Casey Spanish went 3-for-3 with a double, two singles and an RBI.

“It’s definitely mind over matter in this weather,” Spanish said. “We just try to see a good pitch and put a good swing on it.”

The Savage, Minn., native said he was used to blustery weather, but felt sorry for the Jayhawks from warmer climates.

“I’ve got a big advantage over those other guys,” he said.

KU right fielder Matt Tribble continued his 14-game hitting streak with a double in the fifth. The junior has gotten a hit in every game this season.

“I’ve been just trying to hit the ball hard. That’s all I’m trying to do,” Tribble said. “I’m not really thinking, ‘getting hits.’ You really can’t control getting hits.”

Kansas University infielder Ryan Baty is tagged out in a run-down by Eastern Michigan second baseman Brian Bixler. The No. 21 Jayhawks defeated the Eagles, 6-2, Saturday at Hoglund Ballpark.

Junior pitcher Josh Duran held the Eagles (2-6) scoreless for five innings, then junior relievers Brandon Johnson and Chris Smart sealed the win.

A second KU game Saturday against the Eagles was canceled because of the cold. The Jayhawks play host to Arkansas at 4 p.m. Tuesday.
