Haskell wins finale

Senior Kateri Schaaf scored 26 points in her final collegiate game Saturday night, leading Haskell Indian Nations University to a 74-65 women’s basketball victory over Oklahoma Wesleyan at Coffin Complex.

Schaaf made nine of 13 free-throw attempts and seven of 14 shots from the field, including three three-pointers. Haskell made six of 11 shots from three-point range.

The Fightin’ Indians finished with a 9-16 record.

“It was a good win for us,” said HINU coach Phil Homeratha, whose team led, 45-30, at halftime. “We beat three schools this year that we’ve never beaten before. We’re starting to beat conference teams now. In the last six games we played real well. The past two weeks, I can see where we are and where we can go. Tonight was a really good way for them to end their season.”

Homeratha has hopes for a better season in 2003-2004. Juniors Melissa Mossett, Melissa Catron and Delicia Gransen are expected to return.

Mossett scored 19 points in HINU’s finale, and Gransen added 16. Catron fouled out after collecting 11 points and 10 rebounds.

“We’re establishing ourselves,” Homeratha said. “I think we’re just going to get better.”
