Amelia ‘Betty’ Elizabeth Giffin

Services for Amelia “Betty” Elizabeth Giffin, 87, Lawrence, will be in March.

Mrs. Giffin died Friday, Feb. 21, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital.

She was born Dec. 11, 1915, in Springdale, Ky., the daughter of Macky and Rose Hughes. She graduated from Tollesboro (Ky.) High School as valedictorian and from University Park College in Oskaloosa, Iowa, where she majored in history.

Mrs. Giffin taught English in Vanceberg, Ky., and South Dakota before she moved in 1948 to Lawrence. She was a medical assistant and office manager for Dr. William O. Nelson in Lawrence. She attended First United Methodist Church and was active in the Lawrence Business and Professional Women’s Organization, which named her woman of the year in 1983.

She married Kim Quentin Giffin in 1940. He died earlier.

Survivors include two brothers, Charles M. Hughes, Tollesboro, and Winn Hughes, New Bern, N.C.; a sister, Dorothy Thomas, Newberg, Ore.; and a granddaughter.

A daughter, Sue Carrol Schiefelbusch, died June 3, 2000.
