Jayhawks want to maintain high-intensity play

Kansas University baseball players are trying hard to keep last weekend’s sweep at No. 6-ranked Louisiana State in perspective.

“We want that to be A highlight of the season, not THE highlight of the season,” coach Ritch Price said.

But can the Jayhawks maintain the same intensity for Eastern Michigan this weekend? Kansas will meet the Eagles in a single game at 3 p.m. today and an 11 a.m. Saturday doubleheader at Hoglund Ballpark.

On the original schedule, the teams were scheduled to play single games Saturday and Sunday, but Sunday’s forecast of cold, wet weather scrapped Sunday’s game.

Price hopes he has convinced his players about the danger of a letdown.

“We’re not good enough,” Price said, “to walk out on that field and not be properly prepared.”

Kansas (9-3) was named the college baseball team of the week by College Baseball Insider. In addition, third baseman Travis Metcalf garnered hitter of the week honors from the National Collegiate Baseball Writer’s Assn., as well as Big 12 Conference player of the week honors.

Kansas also was mentioned in the latest issue of Baseball America.

It’s a lot of publicity for a team not accustomed to it, and could easily be a distraction, but Price won’t allow it.

“We’ve addressed that pretty good,” the first-year KU coach said, “and I thought our intensity this week in practice was outstanding.”

Senior Kevin Wheeler (1-0, 4.15 ERA) will pitch this afternoon’s game. Wheeler started the first game of the LSU series, pitching six innings but settling for a no-decision. Wheeler, however, won the game with a solo home run to lead off the 10th inning of the 9-6 victory.

Kansas has a single game scheduled Tuesday at Hoglund against Arkansas.
