Athletes of the week

Matt Somers, Free State

Class: Junior.

Sport: Wrestling.

The week: Somers was one of four Firebird champions at Saturday’s Sunflower League tournament as FSHS won the first league title in school history. Somers steamrolled through the competition on his way to the 125-pound title, winning his first two matches 15-0 and 17-2. In the championship against top-seeded Ryan Parks of Olathe North, Somers dominated the 7-2 decision. With a 21-11 record, Somers likely will be a No. 1 seed at Saturday’s Class 6A regional at Lawrence High.

Comment: “Matt has had an up-and-down year, to say the least,” coach Darrell Andrew said. “But there’s no doubt that when he’s 100 percent prepared and steps on the mat he can dominate. I don’t think there was anyone that could have beaten him last week.”

Neil Erisman, DeSoto

Class: Freshman.

Sport: Wrestling.

The week: Erisman isn’t a typical freshman. If a young wrestler has a dominating season, it usually comes at the lighter weights like 103 or 112 pounds. But Erisman has made his mark on one of the state’s tougher divisions. Ranked second in Class 6A at 145 pounds by the Kansas Wrestling Coaches Assn., he lived up to that billing last weekend at the Kaw Valley League tournament. Erisman pinned fifth-ranked Travis Eden of Santa Fe Trail for the title, improving to 27-0 this season.

Comment: “He has worked hard to prepare himself in the offseason to get where he’s at,” DeSoto coach Eric Deyoe said. “His ability to stay focused and not caught up in all the hype is pretty remarkable.”
