Pierce propels Boston with 31 points, 12 assists

? Paul Pierce had 31 points and 12 assists as Boston defeated Golden State, 125-117, Tuesday night, guaranteeing its best Western road trip in 12 years. Walter McCarty added 24 points as the Celtics extended their record to 4-1 on the current trip, which concludes Thursday at Sacramento. J.R. Bremer added 22 points and Antoine Walker had 17.

Boston won in Oakland for the first time since 1995.

Pierce recorded his 17th double-double, matching his career high set last season.

Antawn Jamison scored 39 points and grabbed 13 rebounds to lead the Warriors, who lost for just the fourth time in their last 14 home games. Gilbert Arenas also recorded a double-double with 22 points and 12 assists, as did Troy Murphy with 13 points and 10 rebounds.

As usual, the Celtics utilized their long-range shooting, making 14 of 29 attempts.

Bobby Sura’s three-pointer with 3:13 remaining pulled Golden State to 109-105, capping a 10-0 run, but the Celtics were able to extend their lead to 10 points a minute later.

Jamison scored 12 points as the Warriors drew to 95-82 entering the fourth quarter.

The Celtics took control during the second quarter, breaking a 32-all tie with a 13-2 run. They eventually extended their lead to 69-49 by halftime when McCarty hit a three-pointer in the final second of the half.

Kings 102, Bucks 93

Sacramento, Calif. — Vlade Divac had 21 points and 19 rebounds, and Bobby Jackson broke his slump with five straight points down the stretch of Sacramento’s victory over Milwaukee.

Peja Stojakovic scored 26 points and Mike Bibby had 21 as the Kings won for the third time in four games on a seven-game homestand.

In an entertaining, uptempo meeting of two of the NBA’s highest-scoring teams, neither team held a lead larger than five points until Jackson followed a layup with a three-pointer with 3:28 to play, putting Sacramento up 96-90.

Jackson, the Kings’ second-leading scorer, had struggled since returning from a hand injury last week.

Toni Kukoc had 21 points and eight rebounds for the Bucks, who opened a tough road Western trip with their fourth straight loss to the Kings. Milwaukee had won 13 of its last 17 games, but the Bucks made just two field goals in the final 6:08 as Sacramento ended the game with an 11-3 run.

Grizzlies 108, Pacers 103, OT

Memphis, Tenn. — Pau Gasol had 24 points, 14 rebounds and seven blocks as Memphis won for the third time in four games since the All-Star break.

Reggie Miller’s desperation three-pointer as time ran out sent the game into overtime. Miller missed the opening shot in the final sequence of regulation from the top of the key, but tracked it down in the right corner, pumped and nailed the jumper.

In overtime, the teams were tied at 102 with 2:50 remaining, but the Grizzlies outscored Indiana 6-1 the rest of the way with Wesley Person scoring four.

Spurs 101, Nuggets 76

San Antonio — Bruce Bowen scored 18 points as San Antonio played its first home game in 23 days and defeated Denver. The victory was the ninth in a row for the Spurs, who won the final eight games of a nine-game road trip that concluded Sunday. Stephen Jackson scored 14 points, while Tim Duncan added 11 points and 12 rebounds. Duncan attempted only four field goals, making two.

Denver, which lost its sixth straight game, was led by Juwan Howard with 21 points, while Vincent Yarbrough and Nene Hilario added 12 apiece.

San Antonio broke open a close game by starting the second quarter with a 15-0 run to take a 36-22 lead on Bowen’s layup with 7:01 to play. The Spurs outscored Denver 30-12 in the second quarter and led 51-34 at halftime behind 10 points by Bowen and nine by Jackson.

The Spurs grabbed the large lead despite Duncan being held without a field goal. He attempted only one shot in the first half.

San Antonio stretched its advantage to 29 points, 76-47 on a driving layup by Speedy Claxton with 1:52 to play in the third quarter.

Bulls 107, Cavaliers 101

Cleveland — Jalen Rose scored 28 points to help Chicago gain just its third road victory of the season. With high school phenom LeBron James watching two of the teams that will likely end up in the draft lottery, the Bulls scored a season-high 39 points in the first quarter and then turned to Rose to hold off Cleveland’s comeback.

Magic 99, Hornets 94

Orlando, Fla. — Tracy McGrady and Mike Miller each scored 24 points as Orlando snapped a three-game losing streak. The Magic trailed by 12 with five minutes to play, but gained the victory behind a late 20-2 run.

Darrell Armstrong scored 15 points and Andrew DeClercq had a season-high 14, including seven in a 1:13 span of the fourth quarter to kick start Orlando’s comeback.

Armstrong’s three-pointer tied the game at 89, and Miller’s driving layup gave Orlando a 93-91 lead with 1:05 remaining. The go-ahead possession was set up by Armstrong drawing a charge against David Wesley 14 seconds earlier.

Nets 84, Heat 79

East Rutherford, N.J. — Jason Kidd fed Jason Collins for a go-ahead three-point play with 1:50 to play, then hit a clinching three-pointer with 5.8 seconds left to lead New Jersey. Kenyon Martin added 28 points and 10 rebounds in a game in which the Nets were forced to rally from an eight-point fourth-quarter deficit after squandering a 17-point second-quarter lead to a team that was beaten by 31 points in Detroit on Monday night.

Caron Butler had 17 points and Rasual Butler added 15 for the Heat, who shot only 3-for-15 in the final 7:09.

Mavericks 105, Hawks 79

Dallas — Michael Finley scored 26 points and reserve Walt Williams added 15 points as Dallas took early control and defeated Atlanta. The Mavericks won their third straight and improved their league-best record to 41-12.

Dirk Nowitzki, Dallas’ top scorer and rebounder, finished with only 14 points in 28 minutes after six consecutive games of 25 points or more.

Finley went 10-for-19 from the field, including 3-of-4 from three-point range.
