Principal search narrows to six

Four Lawrence school administrators are among six finalists for principal at West Junior High School, officials said Monday.

The candidates — all men — meet this week with advisory panels of West students, parents and staff to help in the search for a replacement for retiring Mick Lowe, the school’s principal for 18 years.

Here are the finalists:

  • Matt Fearing, assistant principal at Southwest Junior High School since 1998. He taught social studies at West from 1993 to 1998. He’s in a doctoral program in education and history at University of Missouri-Kansas City.
  • Lynn Harrod, assistant principal at South Junior High School since 1996. He was a gym, social studies teacher and coach at West from 1989 to 1996. He has a master’s degree in education from Kansas University.
  • Jim Karleskint, director of curriculum and instruction for the Royal Valley district at Mayetta since 2001. He’s a former principal of Independence Middle School and Immaculata High School. He is a doctoral student at KU.
  • Brian McCaffrey, assistant principal at Central Junior High School since 1999. He was assistant principal of Chase Middle School in Topeka in 1998-1999 and teacher at Southwest Junior High School from 1995 to 1998. He has a master’s degree from KU.
  • Myron Melton, principal of Langston Hughes School since 1999. He was principal of Centennial School from 1995 to 1999 and taught gym at Sunset Hill School from 1984 to 1993. He has a master’s degree from KU.
  • Bruce Petersen, Concordia’s assistant superintendent since 1998 and middle school principal since 2002. He was an elementary principal in Concordia from 1998 to 2002 and Concordia Junior and Senior High School principal from 1993 to 1998. He has a master’s degree from Kansas State University.

Weseman said he would make a recommendation to the Lawrence school board perhaps as early as Monday.

The district began advertising the vacancy last fall. District-level interviews with candidates were finished two weeks ago.
