Mackie services

Memorial services for John William Mackie Jr., 85, Lawrence, will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor Chapel. A second memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg.

Mr. Mackie died Thursday, Feb. 13, 2003, at Lawrence Presbyterian Manor. He was cremated.

He was born July 11, 1917, in Scammon, the son of John William Sr. and Clara Evelyn (Bush) Mackie. He moved with his family to Pittsburg as a teenager and graduated from Pittsburg High School and then Purdue University with a degree in mechanical engineering.

Mr. Mackie served five years in the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of major. He was an officer and director for Clemens Coal Co., Mackie Clemens Fuel Co. and Buildex Inc., all of Pittsburg. He was elected president of Clemens Coal in 1972.

He served on Pittsburg Zoning Board and Board of Appeals, was active in United Way and was chairman of the Crawford County unit of American Cancer Society. He was elected to the board of directors of First State Bank and Trust Co. of Pittsburg, now Gold Bank, in 1982. He also was a member of First Presbyterian Church and served on its board of trustees.

He married Mary Wipperman on May 29, 1943. She died in 1984. He married Florence Mulder on June 17, 1989. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, John W. III, Houston, and Andrew, Ottawa; a daughter, Allison Haworth, Lawrence; and six grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday immediately after the service at First Presbyterian Church in Pittsburg.

The family suggests memorials to American Cancer Society, Alzheimer’s Assn., or the charity of the donor’s choice, sent in care of Rumsey-Yost Funeral Home.
