Key developments in the Iraq crisis

Developments in the Iraq crisis Saturday:

  • British Prime Minister Tony Blair said that concessions made by Saddam Hussein were “suspect” and he must be disarmed by force if necessary.
  • Demonstrators in Asia began the first of dozens of rallies planned for around the world to protest the possibility of war in Iraq. Tens of thousands of Iraqis also denounced the United States and praised Saddam in a carefully orchestrated rally in Baghdad.
  • United Nations weapons inspectors visited several sites in Iraq, including a factory that builds fuses for missiles, an ammunition depot north of Baghdad and a heavy engines factory on the outskirts of the capital.
  • Iraqi Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz, in Italy, headed to the town of Assisi for peace prayers with Franciscan friars. The Rev. Enzo Fortunato, a spokesman for the Franciscans, said Aziz’s visit was important because “the world needs images of peace to conquer the images of war.”
