Peace advocates plan anti-war march, rally today

After dozens of Saturdays spent protesting for peace, area advocates are hoping to draw 1,000 supporters to today’s march down Massachusetts Street.

The Lawrence march is one of more than 600 protests in cities worldwide expected this weekend.

The Lawrence Coalition for Peace and Justice and Lawrence Anti-Imperialists are organizing the local event. Participants will gather at 11:15 a.m. near the locomotive at the north end of Buford M. Watson Jr. Park, march down Massachusetts Street, and conclude with a rally at the gazebo in South Park.

The group has been organizing rallies since September at 11th and Massachusetts streets.

“We keep telling ourselves we want 1,000 people,” said coalition coordinator Allan Hanson. “I guess the weather is going to have something to say about it.”
