KU softball hits road for tourney

A week ago, Kansas University softball coach Tracy Bunge wasn’t sure who her right fielder would be.

Now Bunge knows.

Sylvia Pfeiffer, a transfer from Mount San Antonio Junior College in Walnut, Calif., won the job by collecting five hits, including a pair of home runs, and driving in five runs during last weekend’s four-game tournament in St. Augustine, Fla.

“Sylvia was our most pleasant surprise,” Bunge said. “She got an opportunity in the second game, and she hit so well I couldn’t take her out of the lineup.”

Pfeiffer will be in right field this weekend when the Jayhawks play in a tournament in Poway, Calif. Kansas (4-0) is scheduled to meet Sacramento State this evening.

Saturday, the Jayhawks are slated to meet No. 15-ranked Fresno State and San Diego State. Sunday, KU has a morning contest scheduled against Cal State Northridge.

However, rain in Southern California may force the schedule to be shuffled. Already three of today’s early games have been canceled.
