Topeka: Treasurer seeks return of buyout pay

Shawnee County Treasurer Rita Cline said she has asked a former employee to return $20,456 she received in December and January as a buyout of her employment contract.

After reading the contract on Monday, Cline said she came to the conclusion that she had made a mistake.

Cline bought out Kate Carty’s one-year contract for $21,915 after Carty managed the Shawnee County Motor Vehicle Office at White Lakes Mall for more than a year.

The Topeka-Capital Journal on Friday published an article about the buyout. Carty and Cline now are partners in a Missouri business.
