Baty player of week in Big 12 baseball

Kansas University’s Ryan Baty was named Big 12 Conference baseball player of the week in a vote by a panel of media covering Big 12 games played from Jan. 24 to Feb. 10.

Batty, a junior from Wichita, began the season by being selected the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Assn. National Hitter of the Week after going 13-for-21 (.619) in six road games at Hawaii-Hilo. He also set a school record by reaching base 11 consecutive times against the Vulcans.

Last weekend, Baty went 2-for-7 in a doubleheader at Arkansas-Little Rock. The infielder, who has led KU to a 5-3 record, opened the year going 15-for-28 (.536 average), including two home runs, nine RBI, eight runs, and 25 consecutive fielding chances without an error. He has hit safely in KU’s first eight contests.

KU will play host to Western Illinois at noon today in the Jayhawks’ home opener at Hoglund Ballpark.
