Lawrence’s Reber to talk at streams conference

Alison Reber of StreamLink in Lawrence will speak at a one-day workshop sponsored by the Kansas Alliance for Wetlands and Streams on Feb. 18 in Cimarron.

Reber will share a number of ideas for promoting stream education at the community level.

“Even in the dry times that much of Kansas is currently experiencing, land managers look forward to wetter days, when they can manage their lands more efficiently — both profitably and environmentally-friendly,” said Tim Christian, state coordinator for KAWS.

The program will feature the staff of the Playa Lakes Joint Venture, who will discuss the creation of new partnerships. Topic areas include opportunities to create, improve, or protect wildlife habitat, as well as where funding might be available to complete the work.

City and county officials and staffs will listen to Dennis Haag of Tetra Tech EMI in Lenexa discuss cost-effective ways to treat water to improve quality, reduce flooding and treat waste water using natural systems.

Bird workshop slated for March 4-6 in Salina

Primary topics will be the three bird conservation regions of Kansas and surrounding states — the shortgrass, central mixed-grass and eastern tallgrass prairies.

The purpose of the workshop is to enhance collaboration among people interested in bird conservation efforts in Kansas and adjacent states.

The group will identify priority needs and funding sources for project implementation in the three regions.
