IN 1978 – President Carter unveiled a new $1.2 billion program designed to provide aid to college students from middle-income families that had been beset by rising costs of education.

A second postponement was ordered in extradition proceedings for two men held in Denver on murder, kidnapping and aggravated robbery charges in the death of Samuel Norwood, 30, Lawrence.

IN 1903 – From the Lawrence Daily World of Feb. 9, 1903: ” The (Kansas) university basketball team returned from an extended trip last night bringing with them a record for fast, clean playing. Five games were won out of the seven played. Kansas lost to Nebraska (21-18) and the Des Moines YMCA (17-10) but defeated William Jewell, Omaha YMCA, Ottawa, Highland Park and Fairfield. …
