Birthday party, gifts aid dogs at shelter

? Carolyn Roederer just couldn’t get the dogs at the Hutchinson Humane Society off her mind.

The fact that they had no home bothered her. So when it came time for the 8-year-old’s birthday party, she thought she would do it for the dogs.

The party would have a dog theme. The invitations would be printed with dog paws and her guests would create homemade dog biscuits. “Hound Dog” would play while the children broke a dog-shaped piñata.

Most important for Carolyn, however, the gifts that her friends brought would not be for her, but would be donated to dogs at the Humane Society.

“I didn’t know where they kept the dogs that didn’t have a home,” said Carolyn, of Haven. “But once I found out about it, I wanted to go there. I think most people help out other people. I thought the dogs needed some help.”

Carolyn and her mom, Leslie, brought canned food, cleaning supplies, hot dogs and various items to chew on. Several of the girls wrapped their doggie donations.

“That was a lovely thing for a child to do,” said Sally Shropshire, director of the Humane Society. “It was a pleasant surprise. It was great that she’d think of the animals above herself. That’s the first time a young girl has done anything like this.”
