Old home town – 40 and 100 years ago today

Lawrence Mayor Ben Barteldes said he hoped long-range city planning policy would lead to eventual emergence of downtown Lawrence as a gigantic, attractive shopping center complex of great allure not only for the local region but for surrounding areas — including Kansas City and Topeka.

IN 1903

From the Lawrence Daily World of Feb. 3, 1903: “Topeka is again talking of Methodist university. Topeka had better quit that. If this kind of talk is continued, the Methodists will treat Topeka just like the Repbulicans of the state do. . . . And now the snakes are safe for sure. The Kansas Senate has passed a bill making it unlawful to eat snakes. The governor is a farmer and probably does not think that snakes are healthy food, either. So that law will go into the books all right.”
