Indigenous art is new stamp series theme

“Indigenous Art” is the theme of a new series of stamps issued by the United Nations Postal Administration. This series consists of 18 colorful stamps portraying the art of Latin America and the Caribbean. There are three mini-sheets of six stamps each on the theme.

The first group of six shows a detail of a complex Paracas “linear style” textile from Peru; a pendant from Colombia; Hicholi Indian embroidery from Mexico; an ornament of the Rigpaksa people from Brazil; wool crafts from Santiago, Chile; a Huari feathered woven hat from Bolivia.

The second set of stamps depicts a multicolored poncho of Inca design from Peru; a seated figure of Bahia culture from Brazil; a blanket with a face and geometric designs from Ecuador; Mayan stone sculpture from the ruins of Xunatunich from Belize; multicolored embroidered fabric of Guatemala; Colima terra-cotta fabric of Mexico.

The third group illustrates a Panamanian mola featuring two pelicans; a Mochican stirrup-spouted vessel in the form of a llama from Peru; Tarabucan woven cloth of Bolivia; masks at Havana market place in Cuba; a feather headdress of an Aztec priest in Mexico; a bird-shaped staff from Colombia.
