KU playwrights win at regional festival

One of five plays written by playwrights in Kansas University’s English department advanced beyond the regional festival of the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival held recently in Cedar Falls, Iowa, and will compete at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C.

“Attack of the Asians,” a 10-minute play by Tim Macy, a fall 2002 graduate from Noel, Mo., was selected for the national competition on April 14-20.

KCACTF will underwrite Macy’s weeklong internship at the Kennedy Center, where he will attend playwriting workshops and rehearsals of his play featuring the national nominees for the Irene Ryan acting award. If his play wins in Washington, he will receive a cash prize of $2,500, a two-week summer fellowship at the O’Neill Theatre Conference in Waterford, Conn., and publication of his play.

“Ketchup,” a 10-minute play by Kristin Soper, an Amarillo, Texas, senior, won the Al Gore Popular Vote after the staged readings of eight 10-minute plays at the regional festival.

Free State thespians to stage comedy

The Free State High School drama department will stage “The Man Who Came to Dinner” at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday.

The show will be in the auditorium at the high school, 4700 Overland Drive.

Admission is $4 for adults, $3 for high school students.
