Scholarships offered for study abroad
The Rotary Foundation Ambassadorial Scholarship program offers assistance for students interested in traveling abroad.
Applications for the 2005-2006 academic year are being accepted in Atchison by the scholarship committee serving this area.
Scholarships provide up to $25,000 for study abroad to more than 160 countries where Rotary clubs are based. About 1,100 scholarships are awarded worldwide.

KU says it awarded millions in scholarships
More than $10.2 million was awarded to 5,200 Kansas University students through scholarships financed by private gifts, KU officials reported.
Students on the main campus in Lawrence and the KU Medical Center campus in Kansas City, Kan., received more than 7,650 scholarships during the fall 2003 semester. Some students earned multiple scholarships from awards administered by the KU Endowment Association.
KU officials say a breakdown of the $10.2 million showed the average amount of scholarship support received per recipient was nearly $1,400.
The largest single amount awarded was $9,800, KU says.
Students from 98 of Kansas’ 105 counties earned a scholarship.
Olathe National Guard changes leadership
The 169th Corps Support Battalion, Kansas National Guard in Olathe has a new commander.
Lt. Col. Robert F. Schmitt assumed control in a Dec. 14 ceremony at the Army National Guard Armory in Kansas City, Kan. Schmitt comes from the 35th Infantry Division, where he was the assistant chief of staff for logistics.
The outgoing commander, Lt. Col. Jane I. Harris, is being reassigned as commander of Recruiting and Retention Force.
State Historical Society offers research grants
Graduate students and nonacademic researchers are eligible to receive grants from the Kansas State Historical Society.
Alfred M. Landon historical research grants of $1,000 are awarded each year for graduate student research. Edward N. Tihen Historical Research Awards of up to $500 are granted for nonacademic research.
The grants are awarded to help defray expenses while using the resources of the Center for Historical Research or the Kansas Museum of History. Eligible costs include travel, lodging and supplies such as microfilm, photocopies and computer printouts, among other expenses.
