Banquet to honor Dole, Kansas philanthropist

Topeka — Former U.S. Sen. Bob Dole and philanthropist Ruth Garvey Fink will be honored next month by the Native Sons and Daughters of Kansas.

The organization’s annual banquet will be Jan. 30 at the Maner Conference Center at the Kansas Expocentre in Topeka.

Dole, the Republican presidential nominee in 1998, is a native of Russell. Garvey Fink is president of CGF Industries in Topeka, and was born in Thomas County and reared near Colby.

Tickets to the event are $35 per person or $400 per table. Payments may be mailed to Pat Reeder, P.O. Box 67689, Topeka 66667.

Sen. Roberts makes academy appointments

Three Douglas County students are among Sen. Pat Roberts’ nominations for appointments to U.S. military academies.

Roberts nominated Stephen Ramsdell, of Lawrence, who attends Christ Preparatory Academy in Kansas City, Kan., to the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, Md. Roberts nominated John Kepple, of Lawrence, a home-schooled high school senior, to the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y.

William Pringle, of Eudora, was nominated to the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“These men and women are outstanding representatives of Kansas in every way,” Roberts said in a press release announcing all of his more than three dozen nominations.

The applicants must now meet the individual admission requirements of each academy. The academies will make the final decision on who will receive an appointment of admission. Due to the limited number of openings at each academy, not every nominee will receive an appointment.
