The Corporation for National Service and Points of Light Foundation are encouraging people to participate in a special day of service Jan. 19, Martin Luther King Jr. Day. The theme of the holiday will be "Make it a day on, not a day off."
The foundation planned the event so people could honor King's legacy of service to others by volunteering in the community. The Roger Hill Volunteer Center is available to help individual and group volunteers create service projects and identify community needs. For more information visit www.mlkday.org.
Immediate volunteer needs
- Meals On Wheels needs drivers, particularly over the holiday break when many Kansas University student volunteers are out of town. Volunteers deliver meals to the homebound between 11:30 a.m. and 1 p.m. Monday through Friday. It generally takes less than an hour to complete deliveries. Volunteers are also needed at the hospital food preparation site to answer questions and phones while delivery volunteers are distributing meals. These shifts can last 30 minutes to two hours. For more information about volunteering, call Kim Cullis at 979-1440.
- The Goodwill Thrift Shop, 2200 W. 31st St., needs volunteers to help sort donations, hang clothes and assist customers. The shop is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Volunteers can help anytime. Proceeds from the thrift shop benefit Goodwill Industries, which provides vocational training for people who are disadvantaged and people with disabilities. For more information call Pam West at Goodwill, 331-3908.
- Watkins Community Museum of History needs volunteers to serve as museum greeters. Volunteers can learn about local history as they welcome visitors. Adults and youths may volunteer and commit to as little as one three-hour shift a week. For more information, call Patsy at 841-4109.
