Illogical policy

To the editor:

Locating Saddam Hussein was certainly good news, and I hope it will eventually bring peace in Iraq. I’m still troubled by this situation that actually began for us in the early ’80s.

Saddam has been accused of genocide, torture, rape and extreme cruelty to hundreds of thousands of people. He is guilty of this and more. He gassed and used weapons of mass destruction against the Kurds and Iranians, as well as his own people.

Having the most sophisticated intelligence agencies in the world, we were well aware what a murdering thug he was. Knowing this, we willingly provided millions of dollars in intelligence and military support to Saddam. Years later, we have to fight two wars against him.

As a taxpayer, I have a real problem with this policy. We paid for his support and subsequently paid for wars against him, as well as an $87 billion price tag to rebuild Iraq. Does anyone else have a problem with this kind of logic? If this makes sense to anyone, please explain it to me.
