Cavaliers’ road woes continue

? The Cleveland Cavaliers made a big trade Monday in hopes of turning around their losing ways on the road.

The new additions didn’t arrive soon enough.

Jermaine O’Neal had 24 points, 10 rebounds and six assists to help the Indiana Pacers send LeBron James and the short-handed Cavaliers to their 34th consecutive road loss, 95-85 Monday night.

“We were right in the game tonight,” Cleveland coach Paul Silas said. “If we’d have had a little bit more firepower, we would have been right there.”

The Cavaliers dressed only nine players after completing a six-player trade with the Boston Celtics earlier in the day.

Cleveland sent guard Ricky Davis, forwards Chris Mihm and Michael Stewart to the Celtics for forwards Eric Williams, Tony Battie and center Kedrick Brown.

The swap also includes Cleveland giving the Celtics a second-round pick.

The Cavs may have had a short bench against Indiana, but they still had James, and that was almost enough. The top pick in the NBA draft, who has been more aggressive offensively since having a heart-to-heart with Silas after a loss to Detroit last week, carried the Cavs again on Monday.

James had 27 points, six assists, three steals and three blocks, but Cleveland’s road woes continued. The Cavs’ losing streak is tied with New Jersey’s streak in the 1989-90 and 1990-91 campaigns for the second-longest in NBA history. Sacramento’s 43-game streak in the 1990-91 and 1991-92 seasons is the longest.

Cleveland forward Darius Miles, center, crashes into Indiana forward Al Harrington, bottom, as he is pursued by Scot Pollard. The Pacers won, 95-85, Monday night at Indianapolis.

“How do you come up with a formula for a guy like this?” Indiana coach Rick Carlisle said of James. “He has great maturity, great poise, charisma, charm and skill. He’s having fun out there, but he’s very serious about the game.”

Carlisle’s formula for winning was balance plus Ron Artest. Five Pacers scored in double figures, including 16 points and seven assists from Artest.

Timberwolves 116, Celtics 95

Boston — Kevin Garnett is at a loss to explain Minnesota’s home-court struggles and road-game success.

Sam Cassell had 27 points and nine assists and Garnett added 27 points and 12 rebounds in the Timberwolves’ fifth straight road victory.

“We’re in a rhythm on the road and I’m not sure why,” Garnett said. “For whatever reason, we’re playing better on the road right now. It’s unexplainable like a lot of things in this league.”

The win snapped Minnesota’s three-game losing streak against the Celtics and also ended Boston’s season-high five-game winning streak.

Paul Pierce finished with 15 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds for the Celtics. Walter McCarty led Boston with 17 points. Boston was without three players after making the trade with Cleveland.

Boston cut a seven-point halftime lead to 57-55 on Vin Baker’s layup one minute into the third quarter, but the Timberwolves responded with a 14-5 run over the next four minutes to take control. Latrell Sprewell and Cassell each scored four points in the spurt.

Boston center Raef LaFrentz had surgery on his right knee Monday and is expected to miss the rest of the season.

Mavs 111, Raptors 94

Dallas — Antoine Walker scored 27 points and Steve Nash had 23 points and 11 assists to help Dallas coach Don Nelson move into sole possession of second place on the all-time victory list. Nelson, who reached another milestone with his 3,000th NBA game as a coach and player, has 1,111 coaching victories — one more than Pat Riley. Former Raptors coach Lenny Wilkens leads with 1,268 victories.

Antawn Jamison had 23 points, Dirk Nowitzki added 14 and rookie Josh Howard had 14 points and 14 rebounds as the Mavericks improved to 12-1 at home.

Rookie Chris Bosh, making his NBA debut in his hometown, had 14 points and eight rebounds for the Raptors.

Spurs 78, Grizzlies 67

San Antonio — Tim Duncan had 21 points and 13 rebounds for his league-leading 20th double-double and the San Antonio Spurs held Memphis scoreless over the final 6:02.

Tony Parker added 18 points for the Spurs, who won their seventh straight.

Rasho Nesterovic added 10 and tied a career-high with 15 rebounds.

Lorenzen Wright scored six points during an 8-0 spurt that brought the Grizzlies within 72-67 with 6:02 left but Memphis wouldn’t score again.

Bonzi Wells led Memphis with 12 points, but had a breakaway layup blocked by Bruce Bowen to prolong the Grizzlies’ drought. James Posey, Pau Gasol and Stromile Swift each had 10.

Clippers 109, Hornets 80

Los Angeles — Elton Brand had 27 points and 13 rebounds and the Los Angeles Clippers posted their first wire-to-wire victory of the season, ending the Hornets’ four-game winning streak.

Marko Jaric scored 14 of his season-high 19 points in the fourth quarter, helping the Clippers win their third straight.

Jamaal Magloire scored 15 of his 17 points in the first half and had 10 rebounds for the Hornets, who had won nine of their previous 11 games against the Clippers. P.J. Brown had 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Baron Davis had 16 points and eight assists.

The Hornets, who lead the league in 3-pointers made and attempted, finished 2-for-21.
