Gunman kills two police, then takes his own life

A gunman killed two Mishawaka police officers who attempted to arrest him early Saturday, then took his own life after reportedly telling witnesses, “I can’t take this anymore.”

The officers were sent to investigate a complaint that gunshots had been fired in a residential neighborhood, and they were shot while trying to make an arrest, Capt. Mike Samp said at a news conference.

The gunman then entered the home of Andrew Moreno, sat down in the kitchen, reloaded his gun and shot himself in the head, Moreno told WNDU-TV of South Bend.

Police identified the gunman as Raymond Matthew Gilkeson, 30, of Mishawaka.

Police Cpl. Thomas Roberts died at the scene, and Patrolman Bryan S. Verkler died in surgery, authorities said.

Missing-student search starts to wind down

Hundreds of National Guardsmen scoured a river, roadways, ditches and abandoned buildings in two states even as authorities said the massive search for missing University of North Dakota student Dru Sjodin is down to its final days.

The search was expected to continue through today and cover about 800 square miles. But Maj. Mike Fonder of the Grand Forks County Sheriff’s Department said there probably wouldn’t be any more wide-scale searches.

Sjodin, 22, of Pequot Lakes, Minn., was last heard from Nov. 22.
