Lawrence High School photos to be on display

Watkins Community Museum of History will have a reception at 6 p.m. Monday for Lawrence High School students whose photographs will be on display at the museum.

Angelia Perkins, photography instructor, selected the items for display from photos taken by her students.

The display will be on view Tuesday through Feb. 15.

Spencer Museum to celebrate holidays

The Spencer Museum of Art will celebrate the holiday season today with a lineup of music, storytelling, art and a visit from Santa Claus.

The activities are scheduled from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. today at the museum, 1301 Miss.

Here’s the schedule:

• Piano music with Melanie Hadley, 1 p.m.-1:15 p.m.
• Paper bead jewelry for all ages, 1 p.m.-3 p.m.
• International Folk Dancers, 1:15 p.m.-1:45 p.m.
• Photos with Santa, 1:30 p.m.-2:45 p.m.
• Choctaw tales with storyteller Jacob Bohanon, 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
• Random Harmony, 2 p.m.-2:30 p.m.
• Piano music with Melanie Hadley, 2:30 p.m.-3 p.m.

Refreshments will be provided, and all merchandise in the Spencer Museum Shop will be offered at 20 percent off for the public and 25 percent off for museum members.

JGladman opens gallery in Olathe

The JGladman Gallery has opened a second studio in Olathe and had its grand opening on Thursday.

The studio is at 10275 Shadow Ridge Drive in Olathe’s Cedar Creek community

John Gladman has been a professional photographer for more than 17 years and specializes in children and family portraiture. He has been a business owner in downtown Lawrence since January 1999.

The new gallery features Michelle Douglas Hardeman as a portrait design consultant.

KU professor wraps up exhibition in Germany

Kansas University art professor Carol Ann Carter’s solo exhibition, “Voices from the Walls,” is on display through Jan. 18 at the Burgkloster Kulturforum in Luebeck, Germany.

The show explores connection or touch on common cultural and personal meeting grounds and includes three video works: a title work also called “Voices from the Walls,” “Devices and Strategies for Recovery and Protection” and “The Sensation of Text.” Carter designed the exhibition as a site-specific multimedia installation and homage to the Burgkloster, which has been described as “the most significant medieval monastic complex in Northern Germany.”

Carter’s work has been shown nationally and internationally in individual and group exhibitions and is included in many private and public collections.

KU students advance in MTNA competitions

Two Kansas University students, vocalist Greer Davis Brown and flutist Annie Davidson, won first place in their areas of the Music Teachers National Assn. state competition in November and will advance to the district contest Jan. 16 in Boulder, Colo.

Winners of the district event will compete in the Music Teachers National Assn. finals March 27-31 in Kansas City, Mo.

Davidson, of Lawrence, is a student of music professor David Fedele. Brown, of Minneapolis, studies with voice professor Pamela Hinchman.

Hinchman’s students performed well at competitions this fall. Baritone Michael Brown, of Lawrence, won first place in the National Association of Teachers of Singing competition and second place at the Music Teachers National Assn. state event. Lindsay Ohse, of Topeka, placed third at the state event.

Yoojin Jeon, of Korea, and Soyoun Chun, of Lawrence, won the top two positions in the Kansas Music Teachers Assn. contest. Candice Bondank won third place in KMTA’s freshman division.

KU textiles student wins scholarship

Sarah Hartshorn, a master’s student in textile design at Kansas University, recently was awarded a prestigious scholarship from the Handweavers Guild of America.

The Handweavers Guild of America scholarships support students in the field of fiber arts by providing training for research, textile history and conservation.

Hartshorn creates colorful weaving often inspired by patterns she discovers in real life, such as in language or music. Her design process includes sketches and drawings; she also uses a special computer-aided design program.

Hartshorn has worked closely with Bhakti Ziek, assistant professor of textiles; Mary Anne Jordan, associate professor of textiles; and David Brackett, professor of design.

Deerfield School calls for recipes

The Deerfield PTA is putting together a “Deerfield Family Cookbook” and would like to include favorite recipes from Deerfield alumni, former Deerfield parents and former Deerfield staff.

The cookbook is meant to be a keepsake and will also raise funds for Deerfield School, which opened in 1968.

Spencer Consort to play carols, noels

Topeka — The Spencer Consort, a Lawrence period instrument group, will present “Carols, Noûls, etc.” at 3 p.m. Dec. 21 at Countryside United Methodist Church, 3221 S.W. Burlingame Road, Topeka.

The concert is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be taken.

The performance will be a celebration of music related to Christmas from France, England, Germany and Spain. Highlights of the program include the aria “Bereite dich, Zion” from J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, excerpts from G. F. Handel’s Messiah, French carols from the 15th century, French noûls from the 18th century and early Spanish Christmas music.

Ensemble members performing on this concert include Baroque flutist and recorder player Joy Laird, string player Paul Laird, harpsichordist Elizabeth Egbert Berghout, and mezzo-soprano S’ng Oh.
