Former Kansas University football player Sean McDermott has joined the New England Patriots — his third NFL team.

McDermott, a long snapper, was signed Wednesday by the Pats when Lonie Paxton, the regular snapper, was placed on injured reserve because of a knee injury.

McDermott snapped in every game for Tampa Bay in 2001 before moving to Houston last year. The 27-year-old former Jayhawk signed with Miami during the preseason and played in five Dolphins games before being released in October.

McDermott, 27, is a 6-foot-4, 250-pound native of Lufkin, Texas. He was originally signed by the Buccaneers as a rookie free agent.

• Honors: KU freshmen Charles Gordon and Jonathan Lamb were named to the College Football News Freshman All-America team.

Gordon, who leads Kansas with 53 receptions, was named to the second team. The Californian also averaged 13.1 yards per punt return and made 13 tackles after adding cornerback to his duties in the final three games of the regular season.

Lamb, a walk-on safety from Olathe who ranks fifth on the team with 83 tackles, received honorable-mention status.
