Longo services

Services for Romeo Longo, 85, Lawrence, are pending and will be announced by Warren-McElwain Mortuary. Inurnment will be in St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery in Rome, N.Y.

Mr. Longo died Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2003, at his home.

He was born April 24, 1918, in Rome, N.Y., the son of Joseph and Caroline Giambona Longo. He moved to Lawrence from Rome 15 years ago.

Mr. Longo was a master sergeant in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. He then worked at Griffiss Air Force Base as an airplane mechanic. He retired in 1978. He also was a maitre d’ and wine steward for The Beech’s restaurant in New York and was part owner of Clinton Grocery Store with his son-in-law, Mike Well.

He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Rome, N.Y.; Corpus Christi Catholic Church, American Legion Dorsey-Liberty Post No. 14 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Alford-Clarke Post No. 852, all of Lawrence; and Italian American Heritage Assn., Albany, N.Y.

He married Frances Lewan in December 1942 in Rome. She died earlier.

An infant son, John, also died earlier.

Survivors include a daughter, Cindy Well, Lawrence; two sons, James R., Rome, N.Y., and Joseph J., Canastota, N.Y.; two brothers, Anthony, Rome, and Dominick, Port Richey, Fla.; a sister, Angeline Brooks, Rome; six grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

The family suggests memorials to Corpus Christi Catholic Church, sent in care of the mortuary.
