Call to action

To the editor:

Kudos to John Hamm for his letter of Dec. 5 regarding the “dangerous intersection” at Midland Junction. He hit the nail on the head. I’ve been driving Wellman Road and passing through that intersection for 15 years, and the truth of the matter is, it isn’t the road that’s the problem, it’s the drivers! That section of curves is clearly marked 45 mph, but the majority of the people who race through there drive like they’re running on a racetrack.

What I find the most disturbing about this whole deal is that for the past several weeks there have been numerous stories in the Journal-World and on the local news regarding Midland Junction and how dangerous it is and how dangerously the people drive through there. So, you’d think the city would want to post a few police officers out there to keep an eye on the traveling speeds of the drivers, wouldn’t you? Nope! I still drive through there twice daily, both at peak traveling times, and there isn’t a police officer to be seen anywhere.

Now the planners are talking about “fixing” the area, widening the shoulders, lowering the speed limits, etc. None of that is going to make a bit of difference if no one ever goes out there to enforce the speed limit. And none of it is going to matter until people start driving like they have some sense.
