Young Kracl steps up to propel Eudora girls

? With big sister Lauren Kracl home fighting the flu, Erin Kracl collected 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead Eudora High to a 53-36 girls basketball rout of Kansas City Turner Tuesday in the consolation bracket of the Paola Invitational.

Kayla Moyer added 14 points and Michelle Deluna 12 for the Cardinals.

“We had several girls step up,” EHS coach Cara Kimberlin said. “Michelle was 4-for-4 from the free-throw line. Erin was 4-for-5 and Kayla was 4-for-6, so that helped. Michelle had a rough start to the season, and tonight she got back into scoring, so that was nice. And Kayla’s not usually a double-digit scorer for us, but I’ll take that if she wants to give us that.”

Both teams were slow to start, but Eudora exploded with a 19-point second quarter to take a 27-17 lead into halftime. K.C. Turner rallied, but Eudora closed the door with a 17-3 fourth quarter.

“We played good defense, I thought,” Kimberlin said. “They made a run at is in the third quarter, and with 21/2 minutes to go in the fourth quarter, we were up 10, but we were able to pull ahead a little more. We just took care of the ball well. We only had two or three turnovers in the second half, so we took real good care of the ball.”

Leader Lauren Kracl missed her second straight game with the flu. EHS lost to Topeka Highland Park, 57-23, in Monday’s opening round.

“She’s doing better,” Kimberlin said. “Her fever broke (Monday night), but there was no sense rushing her out there. Hopefully we’ll have a snow day (today), and she’ll be able to spend another day in bed. She really is our go-to player.”

The Cardinals (2-1) will face Paola in the fifth-place game Friday.
