Filmmaker Moore won’t speak at KU

Noted filmmaker Michael Moore will not be speaking at Kansas University this spring, a student center announced Tuesday.

Kansas University’s Center for Community Outreach had asked Moore to be the keynote speaker for its Into the Streets Week in February or March. According to the center’s Kevin Hager, the timeframe for Moore to accept KU’s offer had expired, and the center decided to look for a new speaker.

“I should just stress that it’s very common for this stuff to not come to fruition,” Hager said. “It doesn’t speak negatively on Michael Moore or the center; it’s just one of those things that kind of happens.”

Hager said a new keynote speaker would be announced as soon as today.

Moore — a noted political activist and Academy Award-winning filmmaker — had raised eyebrows by asking for more than $30,000 to speak at KU.

Police report no arrests in brawl at Burge Union

Kansas University police have made no arrests in connection with a brawl that erupted early Sunday morning during a sorority-sponsored party at the Burge Union.

According to a KU police report, officers became aware of a fight about 1:35 a.m. at a party sponsored by Delta Sigma Theta sorority. One officer estimated that up to 75 people were involved in the fight after it spilled into a parking lot, and another officer reported he possibly broke a finger while trying to break up a fight between someone he’d been told was a KU football player and another man.

At one point, an officer saw about 15 people in a stairwell yelling and throwing punches at each other, a report stated.

The KU Public Safety Office called the Lawrence Police Department and Douglas County Sheriff’s Office for backup, but officers weren’t able to identify any victims or witnesses.
