All they want, don’t want for Christmas

CDs, concert tickets, cash top wish list

The holidays are here, and every child has a wish list.

According to many Lawrence students, money and gift certificates are on the top of their lists.

“Most people want money so they can buy whatever they want,” said Caitlin Donnelly, Free State High School junior.

Other popular items students are asking for include clothes, jewelry, concert tickets and compact discs.

“I want clothes or jewelry,” Lawrence High School senior Elina Alterman said. “Most of my friends are asking for clothes, CDs and concert tickets.”

Ben Berlin, a sixth-grader at Deerfield School, said he was asking for a train set and a bow and arrow. He has a different plan for his cousin.

“I am getting her Barbies because she is obsessed,” Berlin said.

Toy stores were hoping buyers would pick specific gifts rather than the gift of money. Ehrin Rapp-Scheuring, the store manager of the Discovery Store in Oak Park Mall in Overland Park, said children wanted toys they could interact with.

“Families come in together and the kids want to play with everything in the store,” Rapp-Scheuring said.

Rapp-Scheuring said the most popular toys were the Remote Control Vectron UltraLite, which is an indoor flying disc for $39.95. Another popular item for older children is the Fisher Digital Slim CD player for $99.95. Both items can only be purchased at the Discovery Store.

To many students, even $40 is too much when shopping for friends and family. Many students come up with low-budget gift ideas for the holidays.

“For friends, it’s good to give a picture of you and them or make a picture frame and decorate it or bake something,” Donnelly said.

Other students also burn compact discs, make jewelry, and give IOUs to their family members.

Just as creative as students are with gift ideas, they are with their wish lists. There is no one master list of gifts for any age, so make sure to tell your family and friends your own wish list.
