Suspect in slaying fights extradition

46-year-old charged in 1982 Olathe death

? An Ohio woman charged in the beating death of her husband in Kansas two decades ago is fighting extradition back to the state.

Melinda Raisch, 46, was arrested in Delaware County near Columbus, Ohio, and released on $300,000 bond. She faces charges of first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in Johnson County, Kan.

Raisch’s attorney opposed extradition to Kansas, and a hearing has been set for Dec. 31.

Raisch is accused of plotting with a man to kill her husband, David J. Harmon, who died Feb. 28, 1982. The man, who is not charged, was named as a co-conspirator in court documents.

Raisch moved to Ohio in 1983 to be near her parents after her husband’s death, attorney Mark Collins said. Raisch has two children with her current husband, Mark Raisch.

Her arrest came more than 21 years after Olathe Police detectives and members of the Metro Squad first suspected her involvement.

Investigators focused on her relationship with a student at MidAmerica Nazarene College, where Raisch worked as a secretary. Prosecutors allege that both were in the duplex where Harmon was killed and that one or both struck the fatal blows.

According to news accounts at the time, Raisch (Melinda Harmon) told police that two strangers forced their way in and demanded keys to the bank where David Harmon worked.

In her original statement to police, Raisch said one of the intruders knocked her unconscious. She said that when she regained consciousness about 80 minutes later, she found her husband’s body and ran to a neighbor’s house for assistance.
