Scouting news

Boy Scout Troop 52, chartered to First United Methodist Church, participated in several October and November events.

Besides attending the Pelathe District Fall Camporee, the troop had a Bike Hike on Oct. 11. They met at the Union Pacific Depot and took two 10-mile trips along the Kaw River levee. They also discussed bicycle safety. Boys attending were Brandon Mailand, Stuart Gilreath, David Long, Steve Wilson, Ben Bartels, Charlie Turner, Doug Rawlings, Ethan Vogelsang, Henry Reiske and Dom Reiske. They were accompanied by Scoutmaster Rowley Tedlock, Chuck Gilreath, Bruce Wagner, Richard Rawlings and Chuck Turner.

The Troop had its monthly campout Nov. 15-16 at Camp Naish. While there, the Scouts hiked the Rimrock Trail and worked on fire-building safety and camp cooking. Scouts attending were Tristan Wagner, Wesley Tedlock, Justin Deaver, Dom Reiske, Charlie Turner and Michael Smith. They were accompanied by Scoutmaster Rowley Tedlock and adult leaders Harry Smith and Richard Tedlock.

  • Cub Scout Pack 3462, chartered to Langston Hughes School, had its monthly meeting on Nov. 20. Various Scouts received awards for accomplishment and rank advancement. The pack also had its annual cake auction to raise operating funds. The Scouts discussed the upcoming Pinewood Derby.

  • The 52nd annual Bromelsick Christmas Party will begin at 1:30 p.m. Dec. 20 at the Lied Center. The Bromelsick party is among the oldest continuous Christmas traditions in Lawrence. It is a party for 4-H clubs, Girl Scouts of America and Boy Scouts of America in Douglas County. Sergei Shapoval will demonstrate traditional folk music and Russian folk instruments. The Party is held under the auspices of the Bromelsick Trust Fund, which was established April 4, 1950, upon the death of Alfred Bromelsick, who left his sizable estate to local Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and 4-H clubs.

  • Boy Scout Troop 55, chartered to the Westside Presbyterian Church, went hiking with backpacks Nov. 22-23 at Indian Cave State Park near Shubert, Neb. The boys practiced their hiking skills in preparation for a trip in the spring to Arkansas. Scouts who participated were Bryce Baringer, Drew Braden, Keith Cowart, Jacob Christilles, David Hanson, Kevin Cottrell, Ben Vogel, Brian Cain and Logan Marienau. They were accompanied by Dan Ohlemeier, Jerry Ohlemeier, Dale Denning, Dennis Christilles, George Vogel and Joe Wilson.
