Marquette grills Grambling

Golden Eagles remain unbeaten with 71-55 win

? To say it was a satisfying week for No. 24 Marquette would be an understatement.

The Golden Eagles, not letting down following their emotional victory over Notre Dame on Monday, stayed undefeated with an efficient 71-55 triumph over Grambling State Friday night.

Travis Diener and Terry Sanders scored 13 points each, Scott Merritt had 12 and Karon Bradley 10 for Marquette (6-0).

“It wasn’t an easy week, with a lot of (term) papers due and getting ready for finals,” Marquette coach Tom Crean said. “We didn’t always play efficient, but we played hard.”

Grambling (1-4) was led by Brion Rush’s 24 points. Paul Haynes added 13 and Larry Haygood 11.

Diener hit a three-pointer to start the second half, putting Marquette ahead by 21. The Tigers responded with nine straight points to close to 45-33. But Grambling managed only eight points in the final 10 minutes, five coming in the final minute.

Marquette's Terry Sanders, left, rebounds against Grambling State's Ron Ellis. No. 24 Marquette won, 71-55, Friday night in Milwaukee.

The Golden Eagles, who hit their first five shots, used runs of 10-1 and 10-0 in building a 42-28 lead at halftime. Marquette broke the Grambling press for easy baskets and held the Tigers to 31 percent shooting (8-for-26) in the first half.

“It was something we knew we had to do,” Crean said, “because that’s something that they do well. They’re very athletic.”

Five of Grambling’s first six field goals were three-pointers.

The Tigers finished with 11 three-pointers, six by Rush, but shot only 37 percent (18-for-49). Marquette, which had eight three-pointers, shot 49 percent (25-for-51).

Sanders established a career high with his 13 points on 5-of-6 from the field in only 21 minutes. He had only four points and sat out much of the Notre Dame game after getting into early foul trouble.
