Get involved

Join the J-W teen board

Students in fifth through 12th grades are invited to join the Journal-World Teen Advisory Board. This group of more than 40 members meets to discuss story ideas for 18 & Under and write for the page, too. Coming up for the board: a newsroom tour and plans for the second Rooms that Rock contest. The next meeting is 7 p.m. Dec. 15 at the News Center, 645 N.H. If you want, bring holiday treats we’ll photograph for 18 & Under (and then you can eat them). For more information, call Christy Little at 832-6361 or Steve Rottinghaus at 832-7254, or send an e-mail to teens@ljworld.com.

Turn in your poems

We’re looking for original poems from students of all ages to publish in 18 & Under. Here are two of our latest entries:

‘Hermit’s Dreams’
Atop my towering perch I pose
In this midnight dream.
The mountains reverberate
With the faint sound
Of bears grappling in the woods.
The moon contemplates her reflection
In the glistening-diamond stream.
I ponder my nebulous past,
As the soothing resonance of the stream
Slowly cradles me into a dreamless slumber.

“Pulse”
Quiet pulse
Your heart trembles
Crisp winds at your back
The pulse and throb of night
Shadows in darkness
Cast no light
Screams smothered
By iridescent smite
Quiet screams
Gentle pulse
Sleep tight
Sleep tight
All is well
At least for tonight.

— Andrea Haller is a junior at Lawrence High School.
