Second wave of vehicles hit by pellets

Sherry Mitchell was just getting into her Chevrolet Malibu on Thursday night when she heard the sound of shattering glass.

“It sounded like a gunshot,” the 41-year-old Lawrence woman said. “It really shook me up.”

Mitchell’s car was one of about a dozen vehicles hit Thanksgiving night by what may have been BB or pellet gunshots, according to police reports that became public Saturday. Many of the vehicles were parked in lots in southeastern Lawrence.

This was the second series of vehicles damaged by possible BB shots in less than a month. Police were already investigating damage to more than 20 vehicles and two businesses on Nov. 12.

Although police said they had three suspects in the Nov. 12 vandalism, there has been no word of any arrests.

Police don’t know whether all of the incidents are related or if all of the damage was caused by BBs or pellets. But police said they were looking for a white car with two occupants in connection with Thursday night’s incidents.

Mitchell was attending a Thanksgiving family gathering at her sister’s residence in the 1700 block of East 25th Terrace. She was moving her car to make room in the driveway when the incident occurred, she said.

Although she was unhappy about the damage, Mitchell said she was glad no one was hurt.

“My two little nephews wanted to go out and get in the car with me and I wouldn’t let them,” Mitchell recalled. “If I hadn’t told them that, they would have been sitting right where the (BB) hit.”

The BB appeared to have entered through the passenger side of the rear window, shattering the glass, Mitchell said.

Mitchell wasn’t the only victim who was in her car at the time it was vandalized. Another woman told police she was sitting in her vehicle on East 25th Terrace when a westbound vehicle passed her. She heard a popping noise and then her rear window breaking.
