Wildcats sink Troy State
Weather doesn't slow Kansas State in 41-5 rout
Manhattan ? Some teams celebrate victories by soaking the coach. No. 7 Kansas State prepared for one by soaking the ball.
All week, as temperatures soared over the 100-degree mark, Ell Roberson practiced taking snaps with a wet ball — not to keep his hands cool, but to get ready for the wet weather predicted for the weekend.
When the rain arrived as expected — and fell throughout Saturday night’s game — it still caused Roberson a few control problems. Even so, he ran for three touchdowns and threw for 234 yards and another score as Kansas State overcame its own mistakes for a 41-5 win over Troy State.
“It wasn’t so bad on my throws downfield,” Roberson said. “But on the tighter throws, where I had to grip the ball harder, it kind of got away from me sometimes.”
Roberson was 9-for-23 with two interceptions and ran for 69 yards for the Wildcats (2-0), who lost star running back Darren Sproles to an apparent leg injury late in the first half.
Sproles left the game after being tackled hard by Robby Farmer at the end of a 5-yard gain. Kansas State does not release information on injuries, but Sproles appeared to be favoring his left leg as he was helped to the locker room.
“He’s a tough little tank,” defensive end Andrew Shull said. “I’m not worried about him at all. He’ll be back, no problem.”
Sproles left the game with 49 yards on 12 carries, snapping his school-record string of 100-yard games at 10. Kansas State’s last game without a 100-yard rusher was a 27-20 win over Southern California on Sept. 21, 2002.
No. 1 Oklahoma 37, North Texas 3

Kansas State quarterback Ell Roberson (3) is pursued by Troy State defensive end Demarcus Ware. Roberson accounted for four touchdowns in the Wildcats' 41-5 victory Saturday in Manhattan.
Norman, Okla. — Jason White threw three touchdown passes and Oklahoma’s defense was as good as advertised as the No. 1 Sooners opened the season with a victory over North Texas.
The Sooners limited North Texas to 50 yards through three quarters before the Mean Green’s only scoring drive, which began against the second-stringers. Midway through the second quarter, North Texas had more penalty yards (29) than offensive yards (18) and didn’t cross midfield until just before halftime.
White went 23-of-35 for 248 yards, including a 64-yard touchdown pass to receiver Brandon Jones early in the second quarter that left a defender sprawled on the ground and gave Oklahoma a 17-0 lead.
Colorado 42, No. 23 Colorado St. 35
Denver — Bobby Purify scored on a nine-yard run with 40 seconds left, and Joel Klatt threw for 402 yards and four touchdowns in his first start for Colorado.
Colorado State tied the game at 35 with 1:50 left when Bradlee Van Pelt broke two tackles on an option run for a 30-yard touchdown.
Colorado got the ball back on its 25-yard line with 1:44 left and marched quickly down the field to give the Buffaloes their first win in an opener in five years under coach Gary Barnett.
Iowa St. 17, N. Iowa 10
Ames, Iowa — Austin Flynn passed for a touchdown and ran for another in his college debut as Iowa State struggled past Northern Iowa.
Iowa State was stuck in a 10-all tie late in the third quarter with its Division I-AA opponent when Flynn, a red-shirt freshman, hit Lane Danielsen with a perfectly thrown pass for 48 yards.
That put the ball at the Northern Iowa 5 and Flynn scored on a three-yard run two plays later. Iowa State then held on with its defense, making two key pass breakups and forcing a fourth-down incompletion with 1:08 left.
Flynn, who succeeded Seneca Wallace as the Cyclones’ quarterback, completed nine of 18 passes for 158 yards, including a 13-yarder to Jack Whitver for a second-quarter touchdown.
Texas Tech 58, SMU 10
Lubbock, Texas — B.J. Symons threw for three touchdowns in his first start as Texas Tech beat SMU.
Symons, replacing the record-setting Kliff Kingsbury, was poised and accurate. He finished 23-for-38 for 297 yards.
Red Raiders running back Taurean Henderson rushed for two touchdowns and caught a pass for a third. Texas Tech’s Wes Welker tied a NCAA record for career touchdowns on punt returns with his seventh, racing down the sideline for a 50-yard score.
Texas A&M 26, Arkansas St. 11
College Station, Texas — Terrence Murphy returned kickoffs 58 and 77 yards, and Courtney Lewis scored two touchdowns to help Dennis Franchione win his first game as Texas A&M’s coach. Terrence Murphy set up a four-yard touchdown by Lewis with a 77-yard kickoff return in the third quarter, after earlier setting up a field goal by Todd Pegram with a 58-yard kickoff return. Pegram kicked field goals of 42, 32 and 35 yards in the second quarter as the Aggies took a 9-3 halftime lead. He added a 30-yarder in the third quarter that gave Texas A&M a 19-3 lead. Lewis sealed the game with a 42-yard touchdown run with 3:06 remaining.
UAB 24, Baylor 19
Waco, Texas — UAB sophomore quarterback Darrell Hackney returned after missing a series to throw a 50-yard touchdown with 40 seconds left. Hackney needed just two plays after Baylor failed to get a first down and punted with 1:02 left. Hackney, who hit 13 of 29 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns, was hurt when somebody rolled on his leg after an incomplete pass.
