Spartans’ Smoker moves up charts

? Jeff Smoker became Michigan State’s career leader in yards passing and total offense Saturday against Western Michigan.

The senior quarterback surpassed Ed Smith when he threw a 59-yard touchdown pass to Kyle Brown, putting the Spartans ahead 14-7. MSU won, 26-20.

Smith, a quarterback at Michigan State from 1976-1978, had 5,556 yards. Smoker came into Saturday’s home opener needing 122 yards to break the record.

In the fourth quarter, he supplanted Dave Yarema for the passing mark with a 53-yard completion to Aaron Alexander.

Yarema threw for 5,809 yards in 1982-1986.

The game also was a triumphant one for Smoker, who returned to the field after he was kicked off the team with five games left last season. His family later announced he was seeking treatment for substance abuse.
