Indians start season on right foot

QB Hahn hurls two touchdown passes as HINU shuts out Waldorf College, 12-0

Now this is a streak Haskell Indian Nations University’s football players don’t mind talking about.

Despite rain and an hour and a half delay while waiting for an emergency officiating crew, the Fightin’ Indians won their second straight game with a 12-0 victory Saturday over Waldorf (Iowa) College in their season opener at Haskell Stadium.

“It feels good. I want these guys to enjoy it and know how it feels to open the season with a win,” said HINU coach Eric Brock, whose team ended last season with a 30-20 victory over Southwest Assemblies of God U after breaking a 23-game losing streak two games earlier.

Brock didn’t know what happened to the original officiating crew.

The Indians had a whole offseason to implement Brock’s system heading into his second season at Haskell.

The improvement was apparent Saturday, as junior quarterback Peter Hahn connected for two touchdown passes. The 6-foot-2, 235-pounder from Live Oak, Fla., only tossed three TD passes during the Indians’ 2-7 campaign last year.

“It definitely helps when you have a couple veteran receivers out there,” Hahn said of junior Chris Muniz and sophomore Cody Wilson, who each caught a touchdown pass.

Muniz opened the Indians’ scoring in the first quarter with a 14-yard reception two plays after a pass interference penalty kept HINU’s drive alive. Muniz was dismayed the Indians’ couldn’t utilize their full passing attack because of the rainy conditions.

“We really couldn’t do a few of the things that we came in thinking we would be able to,” he said. “Luckily we got a couple of scores and that was enough to stand up.”

Haskell Indian Nations University's Chad Murphy (25) tries to shake the tackle of Waldorf College defender Dan Steffen. The Fightin' Indians won their season opener, 12-0, Saturday at Haskell Stadium.

Waldorf, which lost its 12th straight game, did little right. The Warriors fumbled the ball eight times, losing six, and the game featured a combined 20 punts.

With another win in the books, the Indians are serious about being taken seriously.

“We have seven seniors that came back and quite a few juniors that came back for this reason,” Brock said. “As long as we stay together and continue to play well and stay healthy, this season is definitely going to be good for us.”

Haskell plays at 7 p.m. Saturday at McPherson.
