Puppy picnic slated for dog trainers

Puppy trainers from across Kansas and their canine pupils will head to South Park from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday for a picnic and get-together.

The puppies are being trained for Kansas Specialty Dog Service, which provides assistance dogs for the visually and physically disabled. Puppy raisers, such as Lawrence residents Nancy Giossi and Beth Akamura, care for puppies in the program until they are 12 to 18 months old. They train dogs in basic obedience skills, house manners and socialization.

The dogs then return to the service, which trains them in mobility assistance and other skills.
