Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Ornelas

? Mass of Christian Burial for Ignacio “Nacho” Ornelas, 78, Humboldt, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Humboldt. Burial with military honors by Veterans of Foreign Wars Cecil J. Meeker Post No. 1654, Chanute, will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola.

Mr. Ornelas died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2003, at Neosho Memorial Regional Medical Center in Chanute.

He was born July 31, 1925, in Iola, the son of Jose and Juanita (Medina) Ornelas.

Mr. Ornelas was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in the Rhineland, Ardennes, Central Europe and Normandy. He worked for Monarch Cement Co. in Humboldt for many years, retiring in 1986 as a truck driver.

He was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, the VFW in LaHarpe and Knights of Columbus.

He married Carmen Ramirez on March 1, 1946, in Lawrence. She survives of the home.

Other survivors include his stepmother, Mercedes Ornelas, Iola; two sons, Anthony, Humboldt, and Ignacio “Nacho” Jr., Kent, Wash.; five daughters, Dodie Coker, Lawrence, Victoria Lopez, Joplin, Mo., Anna Chapman and Sharon Bauer, both of Humboldt, and Karen Riggs, Gatesville, Texas; a brother, Ruben, Mission, Texas; a sister, Mary Ornelas, Kansas City, Kan.; a half sister, Delores Cannon, Shawnee Mission; 14 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six stepgreat-grandchildren.

A granddaughter and stepgrandson died earlier.

Friends may call from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. today and from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at Johnson-Kunkel Mortuary in Humboldt. A rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the church, after which family will receive friends in Parish Hall.
