Steamy 100-plus degree temperatures are in the forecast for the afternoon.

At 10:54 a.m., the temperature was 97 and the heat index was already 104.9 at Lawrence Municipal Airport.

“Our afternoon highs will top out at 105, with heat indices up near 110. At the moment, we are not in an advisory, but Leavenworth County is,” said Matt Sayers, 6News meteorologist.

Saturday’s high was 101 and Sunday’s high was 105.

“We’ll be heating up again tomorrow to 103,” he said. “About our only chance for rain this week would be Wednesday evening, and that is fairly slight. The temperatures Wednesday through Saturday will hover right around 100 to the upper 90s.”

Overnight temperatures will drop into the 70s through the week.

“It’s been the hottest week of the summer so far,” Sayers said.

But we have had a hotter day — on July 16 the temperature briefly hit 108.

Despite Monday’s soaring temperatures, the National Weather Service hasn’t yet issued an official heat advisory.

But the NWS put out a warning to encourage people to avoid prolonged exposure to the heat and to avoid strenuous physical activity.

“Your body can lose up to a gallon of water an hour through perspiration,” according to the NWS. “Drink plenty of water to avoid dehydration. Wear light-weight, light-colored and loose-fitting clothing.”
