Niners’ WR Lloyd tickled at Kansas City homecoming

? Unable to get drafted by his hometown team, Brandon Lloyd did the next best thing.

He came home to score his first touchdown in the NFL.

A host of friends and family were in the crowd Saturday at Arrowhead Stadium when Lloyd caught a pass from Tim Rattay and beat William Bartee for a 39-yard touchdown catch.

It was the first career TD for Lloyd, who grew up just a few miles from Arrowhead. It was also the first score of the night for San Francisco, which rolled to a 24-6 victory over the Kansas City Chiefs despite having five fumbles.

A fourth-round pick out of the University of Illinois, Lloyd is a candidate to join the San Francisco receivers as the replacement for J.J. Stokes, who is now with Jacksonville.

“It’s big just to have my whole family here and to have my first catch,” Lloyd said. “I’m just blessed to have my first NFL touchdown catch at home. I’m just really happy to be in this situation.”

So is Dennis Erickson, who enjoyed a winning debut as the 49ers’ head coach and believes he may have something special in Lloyd.

“Brandon is having an extremely good camp,” said Erickson. “I’m very, very, very, very impressed with him. He’s going to make the football team.”

Chiefs fans must be wondering if the same is true for the cornerback Lloyd blew past.

Bartee, a fourth-year pro out of Oklahoma, was consistently burned for big plays last season as the defense finished 32nd in the 32-team league. Bartee did not speak with reporters, but safety Jerome Woods took the blame.

Kansas City's Dante Hall, right, hauls in a 23-yard reception in front of San Francisco's Mike Rumph. The Chiefs lost Saturday's exhibition game in Kansas City, Mo., 24-6, and haven't scored a touchdown in two exhibition games.

“I was off by a matter of inches,” said Woods, who’s coming back from a broken leg. “If I would have lined up where I was supposed to, I probably would have made that play.”

Ken Dorsey threw two touchdown passes for the 49ers while the Chiefs (1-1), who led the NFL in scoring last year, failed for the second time in two games to score a touchdown.

The Chiefs won 9-0 with three field goals against Green Bay last Monday in a game that was stopped in the third quarter because of lightning.

Against the 49ers, they managed only two field goals by Morten Anderson, from 23 and 26 yards.

“The bottom line is we have to find a way to get it into the end zone,” said quarterback Trent Green, who was 8-of-11 for 80 yards.

“But we haven’t done any shifting, we haven’t done any moving. We break the huddle and we line up. I think everyone knows we’re not showing everything in our offense during the preseason. But we’d still like to go away with seven points.”

Priest Holmes continued to look healthy after his hip surgery. The NFL’s offensive player of the year last season, Holmes carried three times for 9 yards.

“I think he’s back to 100 percent,” coach Dick Vermeil said.

Rattay, who started at quarterback while Jeff Garcia rested his ailing back, was 8-for-9 for 90 yards. Dorsey, battling Brandon Doman for the third-string quarterback job, connected with Arnaz Battle on a 15-yard scoring pass that made it 14-6 in the third.

Following a fumble by Chiefs rookie running back Larry Johnson on the 29, Dorsey hit a wide-open Jason Isem on a 2-yard TD pass with 7:46 left in the game. Dorsey was 4-of-7 for 39 yards and the two TDs.

Rashaan Salaam, a former Heisman Trophy winner at Colorado who’s trying to resurrect his career after being out of football last year, rushed nine times for 27 yards and caught four passes for 34 for the 49ers.

“When you play a game, it’s always nice to win,” Erickson said. “Even if it’s preseason. Obviously, there are a lot of things that we need to work on.”
