Flag over sky

To the editor:

Good for Heritage Baptist who was able to continue to fly its flag over the lights after a County Commission hearing July 28. It sounded both absurd and maddening to have a county commissioner mention for a moment that we should preserve the night sky over flying the flag, absurd because to truly preserve the night sky would require that the FAA restricts all air traffic to daylight hours only.

Another thought might be to inform God that he should remove all cloud activity so as to preserve the night sky. The only objects that the lights at Heritage Baptist hit are an American flag and flagpole. The lights do not shine high enough to reflect anything else or destroy any night sky, for light by its very nature must have an object to reflect to even know that something is there.

One commissioner’s thought also was maddening because I put myself, as any one of us could, in the shoes of one fighting under the colors. I wonder if the night sky would be more important than remembering those who are fighting so valiantly on other shores looking at other flags. Commissioner Charles Jones or anyone else for that matter who wants to preserve the night sky should take a trip to Iraq where there are no lights to dim their vision of the night sky. They just might be able to appreciate a night sky with Old Glory waving in it. Heritage and all other loyal patriots should keep their flags lit and enjoy the night sky.
