Judy Gragg, Lawrence, celebrated her retirement from Aquila, formerly knows as Kansas Public Service, with family and friends on Aug. 1 at the Veterans of Foreign Wars building in Lawrence. Gragg worked for Aquila for more than 21 years. Loyd Whitson, Tina Lemon, Danny Stice, Pam Henderson, Bobbie Shreve and Jim Shreve played host to the event.

  • Ken Barkus and Kristin O’Connor Barkus, Oskaloosa, announce the birth of a daughter, Kendall Loretta Barkus, born July 9, 2003, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. Maternal grandparents are Mary Lee O’Connor, Tucson, Ariz., and Larry O’Connor, Loveland, Fla. Paternal grandparents are Jack and Shirley Barkus, Colorado Springs, Colo. Great-grandmother is Ramona O’Connor, Waterloo, Iowa.
  • Clara Petefish Moore, Lawrence, will celebrate her 85th birthday with a family luncheon and card shower. Moore was born Aug. 6, 1918, in Douglas County. She graduated from Liberty Memorial High School in 1936. She earned a bachelor’s and master’s degree from Emporia State University. She taught school for 29 years, mostly in Douglas and Shawnee counties. She retired in 1979 as a teacher at Cordley School. She was married to Wesley O’Connell Moore on June 10, 1962, in Lawrence. He died in 1975. She has one stepdaughter and 10 stepgrandchildren. Cards may be sent to her at 1429 Kasold Drive, No. 225, Lawrence 66049.
  • Janet L. Kampfe, Edgerton, recently completed a professional photography course at the New York Institute of Photography. It includes training in lighting, portraiture, photojournalism and advanced techniques.

  • Heather Holmes has been selected to receive the Denise Peterson Memorial Scholarship fro the 2003-2004 academic year at Colby Community College. She is the daughter of Debra Rodman, Lawrence.

  • Girmay Mehari Misgna, Lawrence, received a master’s degree in geography in May from Southern Illinois University, Carbondale, Ill.
  • Melissa Colgan, Lawrence, is the recipient of the 2003 Harriet Fowler Brown/Kansas City Alumnae Chapter Kappa Alpha Theta Foundation Scholarship. The foundation recognized Colgan for her high academic achievement, participation in Kappa Alpha Theta activities and involvement in the community. Colgan is a member of the Delta Eta Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta at Kansas State University.
  • ¢awrence seventh-graders were selected for the Duke University Talent Identification Program.

Selection is based on college entrance exam scores that are in the top 5 percent while the students are in middle school. The students were recognized this summer during a program at the Lied Center. Students who earned recognition were Natalie Rabiola, Evan Adkins, Justine Ahle, Cori Allen, Brenden Armstrong, Daniel Bird, Paige Blevins, Alexander Boyer, Amy Brown, Cali Burke, Xander Casad, Kali Conrad, Yoshika Crider, Kate Falkenstien, Hannah Frydman, Taylor Fulton, Joanne Heppert, Alan Hiatt, Stephanie Jian, Jordan Kircher, Anna Kuczera, Clara Kundin, Myron Liu, Gabriel Moss, Suzanne Phan, Alexandra Schriner, Brooke Sutherland, Anthony Thompson, Anthony Twarog and Leah Williams.

  • Rebecca E. Lysen, Lawrence, has been named to the president’s honor roll for the spring 2003 semester at Drake University, Des Moines, Iowa, by earning a 4.0 grade-point average. Lysen is the daughter of Rick and Vicki Lysen.
  • Ashley Grabill, Lawrence, earned a bachelor of science in June from Northeastern University, Boston.
  • Anthony Frei, Joanne Heppert and Jake Hamilton, all of Lawrence, attended Level 2 of the Future Astronaut Training Program July 16-21 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.

Anthony is the son of Mark and Brenda Frei. Joanne is the daughter of Joe Heppert. Jake is the son of Phil and Patricia Hamilton.

  • Sam Wessels, Anna Kuczera and Nels Hotvedt, all of Lawrence, attended Level 1 of the Future Astronaut Training Program July 20-25 at the Kansas Cosmosphere and Space Center in Hutchinson.

Sam is the son of John and Ginny Wessels. Anna is the daughter of Krzystztof and Joanna Kuczera. Nels is the son of Paul and Chris Hotvedt.
