Big-game seasons at a glance

Big-game hunting seasons have been approved the Wildlife and Parks Commission.

Here’s a breakdown:

Deer

Muzzleloader-only season, Sept. 13-26.

Youth and disabled persons season, Sept. 27-28.

Archery season, Oct. 1-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15-31.

Firearms season, Dec. 3-14.

Extended firearms white-tailed antlerless-only season, Jan. 1-4, 2004 (units 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 15, 16, and 19 only; all other units closed).

The Commission also approved an additional firearms season of Oct. 18-26 in Unit 19, as well as an extended antlerless-only whitetail archery season of Jan. 5-31, 2004, in Unit 19.

Unit 19 is a new deer management unit which encompasses the urban-suburban corridor extending from Kansas City to Topeka, and including Lawrence.

Application deadline for nonresident permits is May 31. Application deadline for resident any-deer permits, which allow the permit holder to take either a white-tailed or mule deer, is July 11.

Resident white-tailed either-sex permits, resident archery permits, antlerless white-tailed permits, antlerless white-tailed game tags, and hunt-own-land permits may be purchased over the counter at Wildlife and Parks offices and various license vendors through Jan. 3, 2004.

An individual may obtain no more than one antlerless white-tailed deer permit and no more than four antlerless white-tailed deer game tags. Only one game tag may be used in Units 1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 9, 10, 11, 14, 17, and 18.

Fall Turkey

Archery and firearms: Oct. 1-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15-31. Application deadline for Unit 1 firearm permits (400 permits available) is Aug. 8. Turkey permits for Units 2 and 3, turkey game tags for Unit 2, and turkey archery permits for Unit 1 (unlimited, one per hunter) may be purchased over the counter through Dec. 30. (Hunters who have purchased a turkey permit may also purchase as many as three turkey game tags valid in Unit 2 only.

Antelope

Archery season, Sept. 20-28.

Firearms season, Oct. 3-6.

Muzzleloader season, Sept. 29-Oct. 2.

Firearms and muzzleloader application deadline is June 13. The archery application deadline is Sept. 27. No change was made in unit boundaries, which coincide with deer management units 2, 17 and 18.

Eighty firearms permits are authorized for Unit 2, and 23 firearms permits are authorized for Unit 17.

Fifteen muzzleloader permits are authorized for Unit 2, 7 muzzleloader permits are authorized for Unit 17, and 5 muzzleloader permits are authorized for Unit 18. Unlimited archery permits are authorized for all Units 2, 17, and 18.

Elk

Archery season, Oct. 1-Dec. 2 and Dec. 15 – 31.

Firearms season, Dec. 3-14 and Jan. 1-March 15, 2004.

Muzzleloader season, Sept. 1-30.

The season on Fort Riley sub-unit 8a include three segments — first segment — Oct. 1-31 (eight antlerless only permits authorized); second segment — Nov. 1-30 (eight antlerless only permits authorized); third segment — Dec. 1-31 (eight antlerless only permits authorized). Ten any-elk permits are authorized. An unlimited number of hunt-own-land permits are authorized. Application deadline is July 11.
