JGladman staff wins photography awards

Photography staff of The JGladman Gallery received awards at the Heart of America Professional Photography convention held April 5-9 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel in Kansas City, Mo.

The convention is a biennial event for a four-state area that includes Kansas, Missouri, Iowa and Nebraska.

John Gladman took first place for Kansas in the illustrative category for his print titled “Duo” and was granted a Fuji Masterpiece Award for the same print.

Laura Wolfe earned several awards for her print “Perfect Setting,” which was captured in July 2002 while gallery staff photographed Jacque and Laura Vaughn’s wedding in Lawrence. She won first place in the nonmaster’s category for weddings and received a Fuji Masterpiece Award. She also placed first in Kansas in the nonmaster’s wedding category and was named one of the top 10 photographers in Kansas for 2003.

Vinland library opens for season

The Coal Creek Library in Vinland will be open 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays from April through October.

The library, operated by Baldwin resident Martha Smith, is the oldest continuously operating library in the state. It contains many old books and offers a snapshot of local history.

Plymouth Church presents music festival

Four handbell choirs and presentations by elementary choruses will be on the program at today’s 29th Annual Musica Festival at Plymouth Congregational Church, 925 Vt.

The ensembles are under the direction of Barbara and Bill Kelly, Dylan Hilpman and Emily Chaney.

The concert will mark the first appearance of a performing handbell mascot, as well as the expertise of two ninth-grade bell ringers.

Summer travel for the Plymouth Ringers will include performances in Seattle and Victoria, British Columnia.

Today’s concert, set for 7 p.m., is free and open to the public.

Children with, without special needs on display

Kansas City, Kan. — “Side by Side: Artwork by Children With and Without Special Needs” will be on view beginning Wednesday at the Synergy Art Space at KU Medical Center.

An opening reception will be from 4 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Institute of Child Development held six free workshops from September to March for children ages 8-11 with and without various disabilities as part of a new program, ArtReach. Each workshop related to a particular medium and was inspired by works on display at the Kemper Museum.
