Officer shoots resident

Yates Center — A Yates Center Police officer shot and killed a man who approached him with knives, police said.

The names of the suspect and officer involved were not released Friday.

Woodson County Atty. Jerry Hathaway said the shooting occurred after the officer was called Thursday evening to a dispute at a Yates Center home.

When the officer arrived, the suspect came toward him with knives and the officer shot him, Hathaway said. The man was taken to Allen County Hospital, where he later died.

The officer has been placed on administrative leave during an investigation, which will be led by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Wichita resident stabbed

Wichita — A man has been found stabbed to death in a Wichita apartment, the city’s eighth homicide of the year.

Jose Felix-Martinez, 22, was found covered in a blanket about 4 a.m. Thursday after two men walked into Wichita City Hall and told detectives to check the apartment, police said.

The two men said they had witnessed the stabbing.

An arrest was made, but no charges had been filed.

Prairie Park plans annual carnival

Prairie Park School’s annual carnival will be from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. today at the school, 2711 Kensington Road. The PTA-sponsored fund-raising event is open to the public.

Some of the activities include a caterpillar crawl-through, cake walk, 15 different carnival games, prize giveaways and contests, a silent auction and food donated by Don’s Steak House.

Show to display quilts

McLouth — The Kansa Prairie Quilters’ quilt show will display work from area quilters from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at United Methodist Church, 209 W. Agnes St., McLouth, during the McLouth Patriot’s Day celebration.

A quilt made in the late 19th century by Rachel Holliday Steuart, grandmother of artist John Steuart Curry, will be on display along with quilts from people of all ages and abilities. To put a quilt in the show, bring the article to the show by 9 a.m. No preregistration is required. Admission is free.
