Sebelius would renovate university residence hall

? Gov. Kathleen Sebelius proposed Thursday to enlarge the state budget to provide more medical care to the needy, keep prison visitor centers open and renovate a Kansas University residence hall.

In all, Sebelius has proposed more than 30 amendments to the $10 billion budget she has already signed into law for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

The governor’s amendments were submitted to House and Senate committees as they began work on legislation making adjustments in the budget and covering a deficit estimated at $254 million.

Sebelius’ proposals include a $12.5 million renovation KU’s Hashinger Hall, to be financed with bonds.

The governor also wants to appropriate an additional $28.5 million — which includes $21 million in federal funds — to cover unanticipated costs in medical services for needy Kansans.

Visitor centers at state prisons in Ellsworth, Hutchinson and Lansing would close under the budget already approved, and Sebelius wants $240,000 to keep the centers open.

Sebelius also proposed sweeping community corrections programs’ cash reserves for $1.3 million, to develop new drug treatment programs.
